The MFA in Photography at IIPCCA is a two-year transformative journey rooted in the timeless traditions of Vedic Wisdom and designed for the modern artist. Studio Practice

This module allows students to integrate their learning into personal creative work. Through group critiques, faculty meetings, and ongoing assignments, students develop a unique body of work that reflects their creative vision.

Transcendental Meditation and Artistic Creativity

Led by Jay Paul Lapointe, students will continue practicing transcendental meditation, learning how to channel inner calm and spiritual awareness into their artistic endeavors.

Critical Studies in Vedic and Global Contexts

Students will explore critical theories in Indian and global photography, learning to contextualize their work in both traditional and contemporary frameworks.

Industry Engagement and Global Exposure

  • Internships & Industry Partnerships: Opportunities for students to intern with leading global photographers, galleries, and institutions.
  • International Exhibitions: Students will have the opportunity to participate in global photography exhibitions and research presentations.

1st Semester : Foundation and Exploration

Theme: Awakening Creative Consciousness through Vedic Wisdom

In the first semester, students embark on an exploratory journey to understand the philosophical underpinnings of photography, rooted in both Vedic knowledge and modern techniques. This phase is designed to expand their creative horizons and help them develop a personalized approach to their work.

  • Historical Philosophy in Photography: Understanding the evolution of photography, from early techniques to modern innovations, while grounding the artistic process in ancient Indian philosophies.
  • Technical Philosophy in Photography: A thorough exploration of the tools and techniques of photography, emphasizing the Vedic approach to creativity, harmony, and balance in composition and light.
  • Visual Studies in Photography: Analyzing visual phenomena, social contexts, and the impact of Vaidik wisdom on contemporary photography practices.
  • Introduction to Transcendental Meditation: Guided by Jay Paul Lapointe, this course teaches students the art of mindfulness and meditation, enhancing their creative focus and artistic insight.

2nd Semester : Expanding the Horizons of Documentary and Visual Storytelling

Theme: The Art of Documentation, Storytelling, and Vedic Heritage

The second semester deepens students' understanding of documentary photography, visual storytelling, and the role of memory, history, and spirituality in shaping visual narratives. Students explore the concept of time and human experience through the lens of photography, while also engaging in critical readings and theoretical frameworks.

  • Historical Reading & Theoretical Approaches: Exploring art history, cultural philosophy, and Vedic traditions that have shaped artistic practices throughout the centuries.
  • Photography & Documentation: A study of the connection between photography and historical documentation, with a focus on capturing moments that evoke nostalgia and emotional depth.
  • Documentary & Photojournalism: Developing critical perspectives in documentary and photojournalism while engaging with the Vedic principles of dharma (duty) and the exploration of truth.
  • Practical Submission & Viva Voce: Students submit a practical photography project, exploring the themes of memory, time, and Vedic cultural heritage. They will present their work through a viva voce, engaging with faculty for feedback and critique.

3rd Semester : Artistic Research and Critical Inquiry

Theme: Research, Methodology, and Professional Development

This semester encourages students to engage in deep research, critical studies, and the development of their artistic vision. They will begin laying the groundwork for their final dissertation and exhibition project, with guidance from global mentors and faculty.

  • Documentary & Photo Journalism II: Advanced concepts in visual narrative, expanding upon the skills acquired in Semester 2.
  • Photography Discourse: Engaging with theoretical and critical discourse in photography, with a focus on research methodologies and writing in visual arts.
  • Practical Project Development: Students develop a major creative project that reflects their philosophical and technical mastery, aligning with the Vedic principles of self-discovery and creative expression.
  • Research Writing & Methodologies: An in-depth study of academic research writing, critical analysis, and preparing publications or artistic statements. Students will learn how to approach funding programs and apply their research in practical contexts.

4th Semester : Culmination of Learning – Final Project and Exhibition

The final semester focuses on the creation and presentation of a masterpiece project, combining all the learning and skills from the previous semesters.   • Exhibition: Students curate and display their final body of work in a public exhibition at IIPCCA, attended by faculty, industry leaders, and global mentors.

  1. Monday to Friday: A structured curriculum that includes practical sessions, field visits, library time, group discussions, and one-on-one mentoring with faculty.
  2. Timings
    • Morning: 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM
    • Afternoon: 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM
  3. Saturday: Masterclasses covering topics such as ethics, languages, culture, and philosophy, with free time for self-study.
  4. Sunday: Personal time for rest and reflection.
